Endocardist - A Family's Journey into the Heart of Darkness

Endocardist is a personal journal of a family health crisis. Endocarditis is an infection of the endocardium, which is the inner lining of your heart chambers and heart valves. The medical solution for this was to use replace the faulty value with a bovine heart valve. When we were asked to create the cover artwork for this book, the visual elements felt obvious - a heart, a cow, a family. What was unclear was how to combine the elements into a meaningful expression. The simple, construction paper-style aesthetic reflects the point of view of the story - from the son about his mom. The harsh, cut-away of the heart revealing a pastoral scene of a forest that fades into a mysterious black imparts to open and unfiltered tone of the writing.
